I started working on the poster for the short film 'Fox the Gambler'. The idea for the design was influenced from a few classic movie posters. It was to have the same illustrative collage as the 'Animal House' poster, yet still clearly show the hierarchy of the characters like many adventure movie posters such as 'Star Wars' and 'Indiana Jones'.
The central image of the poster was gonna be the opening scene of the movie when the main character, severely down on his luck, gambles his life on a game of Russian roulette. So the first two sketches I drew had that as the main focus, with the rest of the cast floating around him. I also wanted to insert the scene where the main character and main antagonist duel it out on the bowling lanes, which becomes the climax of the movie.
Eventually it was decided to change Fox's pose from holding the gun to his head, to just holding it in front of him. Also a few secondary characters where eliminated as well, including the cat in the front of the poster whose part was significantly cut in the editing room.
